So why 'ARCHES'?  When the 290sqm house was built in the 1980's it had been given the title of Txxx Txx Lxxxx.  It sat amoung the upper branches of towering native trees, on the ridge road above Parua Bay for many years and was well known locally as a private home and farm.  Around 2003, along came Ada and made it into guest accommodations.  So successful was the website that a large corporate further down the island with heaps more money than us - jumped up and down and made us yield the name and the domain!

Necessity is the mother on invention and we had to re-invent ourselves.
Secretly we began to call the place 'Shrub Bottoms' but that was unlikely to catch on... so 'Arches', was conceived.

Every photo taken from inside clearly displayed the sweeping 'archeways' that distinguish the place, PLUS... it took us much further up the alpha listing!

'Arches' was also reminiscent for Ada - having grown up in Brighton Dunedin in a little turret house taken from the 1926 South Seas Exhibition.

'One of the Octagonal Turrets from the Sout Seas Exhibition, was later shifted to a beachfront section in Brighton .  It still had the original sloped octagonal roof with vein on top and each of the eight sides had arched windows.  I lived there for several years in the 1970's.  When we 'redecorated' we stripped back seven layers of wallpaper and found remnants of a fine rice paper covered with a Chinese birds of paradise pattern, underneath.  It had now become an art gallery and the re-modeling is superb.  One of the old 'ticket' boxes was used as the out house at the back.' Memories of Ada's former home in Brighton Dunedin.
